John Watts (born August 27, 1749 in New York City , † September 3, 1836 ibid) was an American lawyer, judge and politician ( Federalist Party ).

Career

John Watts completed his preparatory studies and studied law . He held the position of Recorder of New York City between 1774 and 1784 in the succession of Robert R. Livingston and was thus the last incumbent who served under the English crown. Watts was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1791 and 1793 . During this time he held the post of speaker . Then he was a committee member responsible for the construction of Newgate Prison in New York City (1796–1799). Watts was in the 3rd US Congress voted, however, suffered during his re-election attempt in the following US Congress againstEdward Livingston a defeat. He served in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1793 to March 3, 1795. He then held the post of Judge of Westchester County, New York, between 1802 and 1807 .

He died in New York City in 1836 and was buried in a tomb in Trinity Church Cemetery .

John Watts was the son of John Watts (1715–1789) and Ann (DeLancey) Watts († 1784). He married his cousin Jane DeLancey. The couple had a son, Robert J. Watts. John G. Leake (1752–1827), a distant wealthy relative who died childless, bequeathed his vast fortune. However, he only inherited the chattels, the property went to the state due to technical problems with the will. Robert died a short time later. After the death of his son, Watts donated Leakes legacy to the Leake and Watts Orphan House . John Watts was the great-uncle of Philip Kearny , who was buried in Watts' tomb until he was transferred to Arlington National Cemetery. Archibald Kennedy, 11th Earl of Cassilis was Watts' brother-in-law and Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa was his nephew.
