Abel Huntington

Abel Huntington (born February 21, 1777 in Norwich , Connecticut , † May 18, 1858 in East Hampton , New York ) was an American doctor and politician . Between 1833 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Abel Huntington was born and raised in Norwich about two years after the outbreak of the War of Independence . He attended the public schools in his home country. His family later moved to East Hampton, where he studied medicine with his father . Then as a doctor, he practiced throughout Long Iceland and was named after his father, the coroner in Suffolk County . In 1816 he was appointed Surgeon in the 18th Militia Regiment of New York. Huntington also had a political career. He joined in 1820 as an elector ( Presidential Elector ) in the presidential election and sat 1822 in the Senate from New York . He then served as the Town Supervisor of East Hampton between 1829 and 1832 . Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction.

In the congressional election of 1832 Huntington was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of New York , where he succeeded James Lent on March 4, 1833 . After a successful re-election in 1834 , he gave up a third candidacy in 1836 and retired from the on March 3, 1837 Congress of. As a congressman, he was chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business between 1835 and 1837 .

Huntington returned to East Hampton as Town Supervisor in 1844. The following year he became a collector of customs in Sag Harbor , a position he held until 1849. During this time he took part in 1846 as a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of New York. He also served as President of the Clinton Academy Board of Directors for a long time . He died on May 18, 1858 in East Hampton and was then buried in South End Cemetery . His grandson was George Huntington , a famous doctor and researcher who first identified Huntington's disease nervous system disease , which was later named after him.
