Steve J. Israel (born May 30, 1958 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 2001 to 2017 he was a member of the United States House of Representatives for parts of Long Island and Queens .

Family and education

Israel, the son of Jewish immigrants, was born in 1958 in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at Nassau Community College and George Washington University , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1982. He then became an employee of Congressman Richard Ottinger .

Israel lives in Huntington on Long Island with his wife Marlene Budd and their two daughters . He is of the Jewish faith .

Political career

In 1993 he was elected to the Huntington Town Board . He held the office until 2001.

In the 2000 election , Israel was first elected to the US House of Representatives. He succeeded Republican Rick Lazio as representative of New York's second congressional electoral district . From 2013, after a reorganization of the electoral districts of his state, he represented its third congressional electoral district in the House of Representatives, whose area largely coincided with its previous one. Between 2011 and 2015, he headed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at the suggestion of Nancy Pelosi . He was a member of the Committee on Appropriations and three of its sub-committees.

On January 5, 2016, Israel announced that it would not run for the US House of Representatives in the 2016 election . He resigned from Congress on January 3, 2017. He has been a commentator on CNN since January 2017 .
