Robert Jan Mrazek (born November 6, 1945 in Newport , Rhode Island ) is an American novelist and former member of the Democratic Party for New York State in the United States House of Representatives .

Mrazek was born in Newport and grew up in Huntington , New York. He studied at Cornell University , joined the US Navy in 1968 and took part in the Vietnam War until he came back to the US due to an injury. He then worked as a personal advisor to US Senator Vance Hartke , until he 1971 as antiquarian independently made. From 1975 to 1983 he was a member of parliament in Suffolk County , from 1983 to 1993 then a member of the Democratic Congress. His involvement in the so-called Rubbergate or House Banking scandal in 1992 led to his resignation in 1993. Today he alternates between New York and Maine .

His first novel was published in 1999, three more have followed so far, of which the penultimate one was published in German in 2006 under the title Die Hour der Verräter . While the first two novels are set in the American Civil War , "The Hour of the Traitors" is about an alleged conspiracy in World War II . His debut "Stonewall's Gold" received the Michael Shaara Prize for the best civil war novel in 2000 , and in 2007 "The Deadly Embrace" received the WY Boyd Literary Award for Excellence in Military Fiction .
