Gideon Lee (born April 27, 1778 in Amherst , Massachusetts , † August 21, 1841 in Geneva , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1835 and 1837 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Gideon Lee was born in Amherst during the War of Independence . He enjoyed a good education. Lee learned the trade of shoemaker and ran it afterwards in Worthington . He moved to New York City and from there to Georgia , where he did commercial business until 1807. He then returned to New York City and worked in the leather business. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1822 . Then he was a member of the Board of Aldermen between 1828 and 1830 . He was Mayor of New York City in 1833 and 1834 . He turned down a candidacy for re-election. Politically, he belonged to the Jacksonian faction. He was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of New York on November 4, 1835 , to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Campbell P. White . Since he on a run again in 1836 renounced, he left the after 3 March 1837 Congress of. He retired in 1836 and moved to Geneva. However, he participated as an elector ( presidential elector on the) presidential election of 1840 in part. He died in Geneva on August 21, 1841 and was then buried in Washington Street Cemetery .
