C. Pope Caldwell
Charles Pope Caldwell (born June 18, 1875 in Bastrop , Texas , † July 31, 1940 in Sunnyside , New York ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1915 and 1921 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Charles Pope Caldwell was born near Bastrop about ten years after the end of the Civil War . He attended public schools. In 1898 he graduated from the University of Texas School of Law at Austin and in 1899 from Yale Law School . He was admitted to the bar in Austin in 1898, and then began practicing there after moving to New York City in 1900. Ten years later, Governor Dix named him a delegate to the Atlantic Deeper Water Ways Convention . Caldwell took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore in 1912 .
Politically, he belonged to the Democratic Party . In the 1914 congressional election , Caldwell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New York , where he succeeded Denis O'Leary on March 4, 1915 . He was re-elected twice in a row. Since it to a fourth candidacy in 1920 renounced, he left the after March 3, 1921 Congress of.
He then resumed his practice as a lawyer in New York City. On January 1, 1926, he was appointed associate justice at the Court of Special Sessions of New York City, a position he held until December 1935. Then he practiced as a lawyer in Long Island . He died on July 31, 1940 in Sunnyside. His body was cremated and the ashes then scattered around his family estate in Bastrop County .
