Gregory W. Carman
Gregory Wright Carman (born January 31, 1937 in Farmingdale , New York , † April 5, 2020 in Melville ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Gregory Wright Carman attended public schools. He was at the University of Paris and the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in 1956 and 1957 . The following year he enlisted in the US Army , where he held the rank of captain until he left in 1964 . During this time he graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts and in 1961 from St. John's University School of Law in Jamaica with a Juris Doctor . He then graduated from the University of Virginia Law School and JAG School in 1962 . He was admitted to the bar in 1961; however, he did not begin to practice until 1964 in Farmingdale. Between 1972 and 1980 he was in the city council ( Town Board ) of Oyster Bay .
Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In the 1980 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of New York , where he succeeded Jerome Ambro on January 4, 1981 . Since he refused to run again in 1982 , he resigned after January 3, 1983 from Congress .
On January 31, 1983, President Ronald Reagan nominated him as a judge on the United States Court of International Trade to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge Scovel Richardson . His nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 2, 1983 , and he received his appointment that same day. He held the post of Chief Judge provisionally in 1991 and officially between 1996 and 2003. Carman lived in Farmingdale.
