Jonathan Nicoll Havens

Jonathan Nicoll Havens (born June 18, 1757 in Shelter Island , Suffolk County , New York Province, † October 25, 1799 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1795 and 1799 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonathan Nicoll Havens grew up during the British colonial period and studied classical studies . In 1777 he graduated from Yale College . Between 1783 and 1787 he was town clerk ( town clerk ) Shelter Iceland. He was a member of the New York State Assembly between 1786 and 1795 . During this time he ratified the United States Constitution on January 8, 1788 . The increase in popular education was of great importance to him. In this context he was in 1795 the chairmanship of the committee for the establishment of public schools in New York. In the same year he was Justice of the Peace in Suffolk County . As an opponent of an overly strong central government, he joined the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson at that time . In the congressional elections of 1794 Havens was elected in the first constituency of New York in the US House of Representatives, which was still in Philadelphia at the time , where he succeeded John Watts on March 4, 1795 . He was re-elected twice in a row. He died during his last term on October 25, 1799 in Shelter Island and was buried there in the southern cemetery of the Presbyterian Church .
