Henri Gaidoz

Henri Gaidoz (born July 28, 1842 in Paris , † April 2, 1932 there ) was a French Celtologist and ethnologist .

life and work

Gaidoz studied in Germany, traveled through England and Ireland and became aware of the lack of a French Celtology. In 1870 he founded the Revue celtique , which he edited until 1885, and was one of the early members of the Société de linguistique de Paris. From 1872 to 1908 he taught geography and ethnography at the École libre des sciences politiques , from 1876 he was Directeur d'études for Celtic philology at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris. With his friend Eugène Rolland (1846–1909) he was the magazine Mélusine. Recueil de mythologie, littérature populaire, traditions et usages out (10 vols., Paris 1878–1901). The first chair in Celtology at the Collège de France was not given to him, but to his rival Henri d'Arbois de Jubainville . Gaidoz has been blind for the past 20 years.
