Eugène Rolland (born March 21, 1846 in Metz , † July 24, 1909 in Paris ) was a French ethnologist , philologist, Romance philologist , dialectologist and lexicographer.

life and work

Rolland dedicated his life to linguistic folklore . He collected patois , folk songs , riddles , counting rhymes and above all animal and plant names.

Together with his friend Henri Gaidoz he founded the magazine Mélusine. Recueil de mythologie, littérature populaire, traditions et usages (Paris 1878–1912), which (in the first issue) referred to a program designed by Gaston Paris .

Rolland's dictionaries on the French vernacular names of fauna and flora are among the “great individual achievements that take up a whole scholar's life” (Voetz 1990, p. 1256).
