Peter R. Livingston

Peter Robert Livingston (born October 3, 1766 in Stanfordville , Dutchess County , Province of New York , † January 19, 1847 in Rhinebeck , New York ) was an American politician who served as acting vice governor of New York from February to October 1828 .

Career

Peter Livingston was a member of the New York Senate from 1815 to 1822 , where he represented the Southern District . In 1823 he moved to the New York State Assembly , where he was elected speaker . Then he was again State Senator from 1826 to 1829, this time representing the 2nd District. After the death of Governor DeWitt Clinton in 1828, Lieutenant Governor Nathaniel Pitcher succeeded him in office, Livingston was elected President pro Tempore in the Senate and thus acting Lieutenant Governor of New York. In 1839 he attended the Whig Party nomination convention .

He died in Rhinebeck in 1847 and was then buried there at the Dutch Reformed Church , but later reburied in an unknown location.

Peter Livingston was the son of Robert James Livingston and Susan (Smith) Livingston. He married Joanna Livingston (1759-1827), sister of US Secretary of State Edward Livingston and Robert R. Livingston .
