Location of New Dorp on Staten Island

New Dorp ( Anglicization of Nieuw dorp , New Dutch for Neudorf ) is a district in the Borough of Staten Island , a borough of New York City , or in Richmond County (comparable to a district ) of New York State in the United States of America .

native people

Like the rest of Staten Island, the New Dorp area has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years . European settlers

The first recorded settlement of European settlers took place in 1671. After the English had taken over the New Netherland colony , they expanded the Dutch settlements along the south coast, called Oud dorp ( old village ), which had arisen ten years earlier.

In the late 19th century, New Dorp became the seat of the famous Vanderbilt family, many of whom found their final resting place in the local Moravian ( Moravian ) cemetery. The Vanderbilts manor was later used as Miller Air Field by the United States Army and became part of the Gateway Recreational Area in the 1970s .
