Ludwig von Strachwitz

Christian Georg Ludwig von Strachwitz (* 1740 ; † December 22, 1812 in Glatz ) was a Prussian major general , most recently chief of infantry regiment No. 43 and commandant of Nienburg .

Life

Ludwig was the son of David Ludwig von Strachwitz (* 1686; † February 9, 1743), Prussian lieutenant colonel and commandant of Spandau and his wife Sophie Margarethe, born von Fehrentheil and Gruppenberg from the Schilkowitz house (* 1706; † 1772).

Military career

Strachwitz was employed in 1756 as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Schultze" No. 29 , with whom he took part in the Seven Years' War and was wounded near Kolin and Kunersdorf . In the First Coalition War he was able to distinguish himself at the siege of Mainz and received the Pour le Mérite .

In 1794 Strachwitz became a colonel in Regiment No. 37 . In 1799 he was promoted to major general and chief of the 44th Infantry Regiment . In 1803 he was transferred to Liegnitz and received the 43rd Infantry Regiment stationed there. During the Fourth Coalition War he was the fortress commander of Nienburg. When the French marched in after the battle of Jena and Auerstedt and the fortress of Hameln surrendered, Strachwitz surrendered the fortress of Nienburg with all its supplies on November 25 without a fight. 4000 Prussians were taken prisoner by the French. For this Strachwitz 1809 by a military court to four years imprisonment convicted.

Strachwitz died unmarried.
