location

The building is located on the land border between Wurgwitz and Niederhermsdorf an der Wiederitz . State road 36 runs north of the facility on its section between Wurgwitz and Kesselsdorf . Immediately to the east of the monument, the street Zur Wiederitz branches off from the state street and bridges the Wiederitz. Access to the facility is located directly behind the bridge.

history

The memorial was erected by the unemployed from August 1934 to commemorate the 56 people who died in the First World War in the former communities of Wurgwitz and Niederhermsdorf. The centerpiece of the monument is a stone column that is enclosed on both sides by a wall. After the inauguration, there was a water basin in front of two lower columns with planters. This is no longer available today. The names of the victims were deposited in a steel box. The National Socialists used the site for their propaganda since the monument was inaugurated in September 1934.

After the Second World War , which claimed around 170 victims in the community, the memorial was to be converted into a memorial for those who fell in both world wars. The Saxon state government forbade the work, however, and the restoration requests made after 1960 were not taken into account. After the fall of the Wall , the renovation work was finally carried out, and in 2008 the facility was fundamentally repaired. A plaque was also attached to the memorial and was unveiled on May 22, 2008.
