Matthew D. Lagan

Matthew Diamond Lagan (born June 20, 1829 in Maghera , United Kingdom , †  April 8, 1901 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an Irish -American politician . Between 1887 and 1891 he represented the state of Louisiana twice in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Matthew Lagan attended public schools in his home country, Ireland . In 1843 he came to the United States, where he settled in New Orleans on December 28 of that year. There he worked in the craft and trade. At the beginning of the civil war , he equipped many Confederate warships. He later became a member of the Confederate States Navy . After the war, Lagan began a political career in New Orleans as a Democrat . In 1867 he became a member of the city council. In 1879 he was a member of an assembly to revise the state constitution. In 1882 he was temporarily acting mayor of the city as chairman of the city council of New Orleans.

In the congressional election of 1886 , Lagan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Nathaniel D. Wallace on March 4, 1887 . Since he refused to run again in 1888, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1889 . His mandate then fell to the Republican Hamilton D. Coleman . In 1890, Lagan ran again for the US House of Representatives. After his election victory, he was able to replace Coleman on March 4, 1891 and take his old seat in Congress again. Until March 3, 1893, he spent another legislative period in Congress.

After his final resignation from the US House of Representatives, Lagan withdrew from politics. He died on April 8, 1901 in New Orleans and was buried there.
