Maghera ( Irish : Machaire Rátha; German: "Plane of the Ring Fort ") is a city in northeast Ireland in the historic county of Londonderry in Northern Ireland .

The place

The place Maghera developed around St. Lurach's Church, which - originally as a monastery - was founded around the year 500. Today Maghera is part of District Mid Ulster .

In parliamentary terms, Maghera belongs to Mid Ulster . In the 2001 census , Maghera had a population of 3711 people (after 2876 in the 1991 census). Of these, 72.4% were Roman Catholic, while 27.1% had a Protestant background. 14 people were killed in Maghera during the Northern Ireland conflict.

As early as 1830, on July 12th, there were clashes at Orange Parades, as a result of which several houses of Catholic residents were burned down by Protestants.

Maghera is at the junction of the A42 from the east and the A29 from north to south and just 1 km from the A6 which connects Belfast with Derry .

Maghera was connected to the rail network from 1880 to 1959.

Maghera is one of the places in Ireland where cross slabs were found. North of Maghera is the rampart Dung Lady , the Court tomb of Tamnyrankin and Tirnony Dolmen .

Maghera is also the name of a townland and a mountain in Co. Clare , north of Limerick , on the summit of which there is a 122 meter high transmission mast (coordinates: 52 ° 58'6 "N 8 ° 43'6" W).
