Excavation finds from Tamnyrankin

The north-west-south-east oriented Court Tomb of Tamnyrankin ( Irish Tamhnaigh ) is located in the "Glenullin bog" (moor) near Swatragh in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland and is one of the well-preserved megalithic complexes of this type, which was built in the Irish Neolithic (around 3200 BC .) originated. Court Tombs are among the megalithic chamber tombs ( English chambered tombs ) of the British Isles . With around 400 specimens, they are found almost exclusively in Ulster in the north of Ireland or in Northern Ireland.

The unusually straight facade, consisting of narrow, angular blocks up to 1.5 m high, in the south-east of the Court Tombs has been completely preserved, but overgrown by gorse . Some of the edging curbs have been preserved and the 26.5 m long and nine to ten meter wide hill is in excellent condition. The forecourt, which is seven meters deep, is 4.6 meters wide. The gallery, which is around nine meters long, has two chambers marked by side posts, in front of which there is an antechamber or a small corridor area of around 1.62 m × 1.15 m in size. The damaged access posts indicate an acutely hewn entrance . The chambers show signs of being covered by a cantilever vault .

At the rear of the stone mound overgrown with gorse , which was excavated by Ivor Herring in 1940, is an area that was added later. It consists of a corridor about a meter wide that leads across the hill. It could originally be two chambers accessible from the sides, the partition wall of which has been lost.

The finds consisted of the corpse burn of an adult man, late Neolithic bowls with a decoration of the upper area that ends in triangles and flint tools . Three urns with bone material were found in the immediate vicinity of the facility .

About 100 m to the southwest, three menhirs almost one meter high indicate a round structure that could be the courtyard of another court tomb or the rest of a stone circle. Nearby is the Court Tomb by Knockoneill .
