Alfred Briggs Irion

Alfred Briggs Irion (born February 18, 1833 in Evergreen , Avoyelles Parish , Louisiana , †  May 21, 1903 in New Orleans , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1885 and 1887 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alfred Irion attended public schools in his home country and then Franklin College in Opelousas . This was followed by studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until 1855 . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1857, he began to work in Marksville (Louisiana) in his new profession. At the same time he also embarked on a political career.

In 1861, Irion was a delegate at the meeting deliberating on the withdrawal of the State of Louisiana from the Union. He vehemently opposed this step, but could not prevail. After the outbreak of civil war , he served in the Confederate Army until 1864 . He was then elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in 1864 and 1865 . After that time he continued his legal practice in Marksville. In this city he also published a newspaper between 1866 and 1874. In 1870, Irion moved to Evergreen. He also worked as a lawyer in his new hometown. He also began to work as a planter and writer.

Politically, Irion was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1879 he attended a meeting to revise the Louisiana Constitution as a delegate. Between 1880 and 1884 he served as an appellate judge in the third judicial district of his state. In the congressional elections of 1884 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Edward T. Lewis on March 4, 1885 . Since he was not nominated by his party for a further term in 1886, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1887 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Alfred Irion withdrew from politics. He died on May 21, 1903 in New Orleans and was buried in Evergreen. Irion was married to Caroline King (1835-1878), with whom he had eight children.
