Mark Wotte (born December 16, 1960 in Enschede ) is a Dutch former soccer player and current soccer coach .

Player career

Wotte began his active career in 1980 at FC Vlaardingen in the Eerste Divisie , the second highest Dutch professional league. Right away he made the breakthrough there and became a regular player. As good as his personal development was, that of the club was bad. In the league it was only enough for the penultimate place and finally the club had to file for bankruptcy, which led to forced relegation. But Wotte's achievements also noticed the Dutch first division, so that he moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the summer of 1981 . He made his debut in the Eredivisie on October 18, 1981 in a 4-2 win against AZ Alkmaar . Wotte came on for André Stafleu in the 84th minute . But he was rarely used there and they parted ways again in the summer of 1982. The defender completed his last first division encounter on May 22, 1982 against FC Twente Enschede , where he was in the club's starting line-up. Until then, he only had seventeen league minutes. Wotte signed in the summer of 1982 at the Eredivisie relegated FC Den Haag , where he came back to more missions. As a relegated person you missed the immediate re-promotion. The defender transferred again and wore the jersey of league competitor Schiedamse Voetbal Vereniging for the new season . There he was active for three years without having any notable success. In 1986 Wotte ended his active career at the age of 25.

Coaching career

During his active time, Wotte was drawn into the coaching business. For the 1982/83 season he was already active in the youth coaching staff of ADO Den Haag , before he was head coach at the lower-class club VV Rijswijk from 1983 , who looked after Wotte until 1988. In the same year ADO Den Haag recruited him, where he took care of the youth from now on. In 1990 Wotte joined the coaching team at Co Adriaanse to coach the Eredivisie team. After this retired, Wotte was briefly head coach until new coach Nol de Ruiter let him move back into the second line. In 1994 he was lured by the amateur club FC Lisse , where the football coach stayed for two years before The Hague reported again. Wotte took over from Theo Verlangen and led the team into the play-off round in 1996/97 and 1997/98 for promotion to the Dutch House of Lords. However, these were each missed. At his side as assistant coach was André Wetzel , with whom he also worked in the following years. For the new season , FC Utrecht secured the services of the coach. After just one year, Wotte signed for FC Den Bosch . After this engagement was also ended, the football coach was responsible for the U-21 selection of the Netherlands, where Wetzel, then head coach of the U19 team, assisted him again. At the same time Wotte works under Louis van Gaal for the senior national team . With the U21, Wotte wanted to qualify for the U-21 European Football Championship in 2002 , but managed to do so after failing in the play-off games 2-2 and 0-1 against England . He trained later senior national team greats such as Dirk Kuyt and Rafael van der Vaart . After the failure, Wotte switched back to the club coaching business and replaced Hans Westerhof at Willem II Tilburg . The team had only mediocre successes. After the coach left Willem, his longtime helper took over Wetzel. After an interlude at Feyenoord Rotterdam as a sporting director, Wotte ventured abroad and in 2006 signed a contract with the Egyptian club Ismaily SC . After half a year he moved back to the Netherlands, where he was coach of the RKC Waalwijk from November . After only one season with the Waalwijkern, Wotte tried in Qatar at Al-Ahli SC . In the summer of 2008 he was recruited by the English second division team Southampton FC , where he should be responsible as an assistant coach. In January 2009 he replaced compatriot Jan Poortvliet as head coach. In July of the same year, after the German-born Markus Liebherr bought the club the day before and saved it from bankruptcy, Wotte was also replaced. Shortly before, he could not secure the relegation of the FCS , so that the club was relegated to Football League One . Even before Liebherr's takeover, the Saints board and Wotte agreed to continue working. After a six-month break, he was hired by the Romanian club FC Universitatea Craiova . At the time, they were fighting to stay in the league. In May 2010, the FCUC officials put him on leave after Wotte lost two games in a row. Overall, he won only five out of thirteen games with Universitatea. Just two weeks later he was introduced as the new coach from his former club Ismaily SC. With them he started not only in the Egyptian Premier League , but also in the CAF Champions League . About the Kenyan club Sofapaka FC , the club US Stade Tamponnaise from the island of Réunion and the representative from Sudan Al-Hilal Khartoum , Wotte qualified with his club for the group stage of the competition. After only two wins and four defeats from six games, they missed progress and placed behind JS Kabylie , Al-Ahly Kairo , but still ahead of Heartland FC .

Trivia

  • Wotte has two sons, Boy Wotte and Sem Wotte, who both play football actively but have not yet made it into the professional league. Boy currently plays in the youth of ADO Den Haag .
