Edward T. Lewis

Edward Taylor Lewis (born October 26, 1834 in Opelousas , Louisiana , †  April 26, 1927 there ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Lewis initially enjoyed a private education. He then attended Wesleyan University in Delaware ( Ohio ). After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1859, he began to work in this profession in Opelousas. During the civil war he rose in the Confederate Army from simple soldier to captain of a cavalry unit.

After the war he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1865 and 1867 he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives . In the 1882 congressional elections , Andrew Herron was actually elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as the Democratic Party candidate in the sixth constituency of Louisiana . But since he died, a by-election was held on February 15, 1883, which Edward won. On March 4th, he was able to take over the mandate previously exercised by Edward White Robertson . Since he was not nominated for re-election by his party in 1884, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1885 .

Edward Lewis served as a judge in the Louisiana Fifth Judicial District between 1887 and 1892. From 1886 to 1888 he was once again a member of the House of Representatives in his state. By 1908, Lewis held other judicial posts in Louisiana; after that he worked as a lawyer again. He died on April 26, 1927 in his native Opelousas.
