Garret Neal Graves (born January 31, 1972 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ) is an American politician . Since January 2015 he has represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1990 Garret Graves graduated from Catholic High School in Baton Rouge. He then studied at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa , the Louisiana Tech University in Ruston and the American University in Washington, DC He then embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was on the staff of several members of Congress from Louisiana such as the Democratic US Senator John Breaux and his successor David Vitter . In the meantime he was also on the staff of Congressman Billy Tauzin . Graves was also an administrative member of the Senate Committees on Trade Affairs and Science and Transportation. In the US House of Representatives, he was also an administrative member of the Energy and Trade Committee. Until February 2014, he headed the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority , which deals with disasters on the Gulf Coast. In this capacity he negotiated with British Petroleum after the 2010 oil spill .

In the 2014 congressional election , Graves was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the sixth constituency of Louisiana, where he succeeded Bill Cassidy , who was elected to the US Senate, on January 3, 2015 . He won with 62:38 percent against the Democrat Edwin Edwards . Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
