Charles Joseph "Charlie" Melancon / məˈlɔːsɔː / (born October 3, 1947 in Napoleonville , Louisiana ) is an American politician . From 2005 to 2011 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charlie Melancon studied at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette until 1971 . Then he worked as a private businessman. He was also the chairman of the Agricultural Development Council at Louisiana State University . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1987 and 1993 he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives .

In the 2004 congressional election , Melancon was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Louisiana . There he took over from Billy Tauzin on January 3, 2005 . He did not apply for re-election; instead, he ran unsuccessfully in the November 2010 election to the United States Senate . With 38:57 percent he was defeated by the Republican incumbent David Vitter . Most recently, he was a member of the House of Representatives' Energy and Trade Committee and two of its sub-committees. The Republican Jeff Landry was elected to his successor in the third district, who clearly defeated the Democrat Ravi Kishan Sangisetty. Melancon resigned from Congress on January 3, 2011.

Charlie Melancon is married and has two children.
