The University of Louisiana at Lafayette (also UL Lafayette , Louisiana-Lafayette or UL called) is a state university in Lafayette in the US state of Louisiana . With 17,075 students, it is the largest and oldest location in the University of Louisiana system . It is the second largest college in Louisiana. The university is particularly known for its research and teaching in the fields of computer science as well as evolutionary and environmental biology.

history

UL Lafayette was founded in 1900 as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute . In 1921 this was renamed the Southwestern Louisiana Institute . In 1960 it was renamed University of Southwestern Louisiana . The university was given its current name in 1999.

Sports

The UL Lafayette sports teams are known as the Louisiana Ragin 'Cajuns and attend the Sun Belt Conference .
