John Cooksey

John Cooksey (born August 20, 1941 in Alexandria , Louisiana ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2003 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Cooksey first attended LaSalle High School and then studied at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge until 1962 . He then studied medicine at the same university until 1966. 28 years later he completed his studies at the University of Texas at Austin , where he studied business administration. Between 1967 and 1969 he was a soldier in the US Air Force . He was stationed in Texas for most of the time . In the meantime he was also transferred to Thailand . Until 1972 he was a member of the Air Force Reserve. In the following years he worked as an ophthalmologist.

Politically, Cooksey became a member of the Republican Party . In the 1996 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Jim McCrery on January 3, 1997 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2003 . In 2002 Cooksey declined to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he applied unsuccessfully within his party to be nominated for the US Senate elections . Since then he has been working as a doctor again. He is married to Ann Gabrill, with whom he has three children.
