James McCleery

James McCleery (born December 2, 1837 in Trumbull County , Ohio , †  November 5, 1871 in New York City ) was an American politician . In 1871 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James McCleery attended Oberlin College in Ohio in 1859 and 1860 . During the civil war he served as an officer in the Union Army . He was wounded several times; he lost his right arm at the battle of Shiloh . By the end of the war he had reached the rank of major. He also held the rank of Brevet Brigadier General with the voluntary associations . In 1866 he rejoined the Army, this time as a captain. He stayed in the military until December 15, 1870. He then bought a plant in St. Mary Parish , Louisiana. At the same time he also worked there as a lawyer. He also became a school councilor in the fourth school district of Louisiana.

Politically, McCleery was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Joseph P. Newsham on March 4, 1871 . McCleery could only exercise his mandate in Congress until his death on November 5, 1871. He died while visiting New York City. After a by-election, his mandate fell to Alexander Boarman .
