T. Ashton Thompson (1965)

Theo Ashton Thompson (born March 31, 1916 in Ville Platte , Evangeline Parish , Louisiana , † July 1, 1965 in Gastonia , North Carolina ) was an American politician and represented the state of Louisiana as a member of the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ashton Thompson attended the public school in Ville Platte. He then went to Louisiana State University between 1932 and 1934. There he also completed a course in higher accounting. Building on this, he worked for the State Highway Commission as an auditor. He carried out this activity between 1934 and 1940. He later represented Louisiana in the 1942 National Assembly in Chicago to establish a civil defense program.

When the United States entered World War II, Thompson enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces . He served there between 1942 and 1946. He was then state officials for financial planning and financial advisor to the Parliament of Louisiana between 1948 and 1952. In addition, he was Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the State Employees Retirement System from 1947 to 1953. Between 1950 and 1951 he was in Louisiana on behalf of the US State Department to involved in teaching foreign politicians in democratic principles.

Thompson was elected a Democrat in the 83rd and six subsequent Congresses. His service ranged from January 3, 1953 to his death on July 1, 1965, in a car accident in Gastonia, North Carolina. He was buried in the Evangeline Memorial Park Cemetery in Ville Platte.

During his tenure he was involved in the creation of the Southern Manifesto , which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions.
