Joseph Cao (* 13. March 1967 in Saigon , South Vietnam as Cao Quang Ánh ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ) and lawyer . In December 2008, he was the first person of Vietnamese origin to be elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he represented the 2nd  Congressional Constituency of Louisiana until 2011.

Life

Joseph Cao left South Vietnam in 1976 and moved with mother and sisters to the United States, where the family settled in Houston . He received a bachelor's degree in physics from Baylor University and a master's degree in philosophy from Fordham University . He eventually earned a Juris Doctor from Loyola University in 2000 .

Cao subsequently worked as a lawyer and later began to get involved in politics. In 2007 he applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives ; the following year he ran against the Democratic incumbent William J. Jefferson in the House of Representatives election . After he had previously been questioned due to corruption investigations in his own party, he only got 46.8% of the vote and after 18 years had to cede his seat to Cao, who achieved a share of 49.5%. In the 2010 election, Joseph Cao lost 33% of the vote to Democrat Cedric Richmond who got 65% of the vote.
