Cherubusco Newton (born May 15, 1848 in Greensburg , St. Helena Parish , Louisiana , †  May 26, 1910 in Monroe , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cherubusco Newton attended private schools in Bastrop . He then studied at Louisiana State University , which was then in Alexandria . He then taught as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1870, he began to work in this profession in Bastrop. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Newton was a member of the Louisiana Senate between 1879 and 1883 . In 1885 he turned down a judge's position. In the congressional elections of 1886 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded J. Floyd King on March 4, 1887 . Since he was no longer nominated by his party for the elections in 1888, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1889 . In June 1888 he took part as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis , on which US President Grover Cleveland was nominated for a second term.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Cherubusco Newton practiced again as a lawyer in Bastrop. He later moved his office and residence to Monroe. He died there on May 26, 1910.
