Numa F. Montet

Numa Francois Montet (born September 17, 1892 in Thibodaux , Louisiana , †  October 12, 1985 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1929 and 1937 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Numa Montet attended public schools in his home country including Louisiana State Normal College in Natchitoches . After a subsequent law degree at Tulane University in New Orleans and his admission as a lawyer in 1913, he began to work in Franklin in this profession. In 1914 he became a treasurer of his hometown Thibodaux. A year later he became the legal representative of this community.

Politically, Montet was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1916 and 1920 he was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives . In 1924 and 1932 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . In 1924, Montet applied unsuccessfully for the office of Attorney General of Louisiana. In 1925 he became the acting district attorney in the 20th judicial district of his state. Finally, he served as an advisor to the Louisiana Highway Commission in 1928 and 1929.

After the death of Whitmell P. Martin , Montet was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for the by-election for the third seat of Louisiana , where he took up his new mandate on August 6, 1929. After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1937 . In 1933 the 20th and 21st amendments to the constitution were passed there. During Montet's time in the US House of Representatives since 1933, many of the New Deal laws of the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt were discussed and enacted there.

In 1936, Montet was no longer nominated by his party for a further term in the US House of Representatives. In the following years he practiced as a lawyer again. Numa Montet died on October 12, 1985 in his birthplace Thibodaux at the age of 93.
