Robert L. Mouton

Robert Louis Mouton (born October 20, 1892 in Duchamp , St. Martin Parish , Louisiana , †  November 26, 1956 in New Orleans , Louisiana) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1941 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

As a child, Robert Mouton moved with his parents to Lafayette , where he attended public schools. He then studied at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute , also in Lafayette. Between 1911 and 1912 Mouton worked as a bank clerk. He was then from 1912 to 1914 a teacher at Charles College in Grand Coteau . He then ran an evening school in Lafayette and worked in the insurance industry. Between 1916 and 1919 he worked for the Haiti Customs Service . His activity there was interrupted by the First World War, in which he participated as a soldier in the US Marine Corps . There he worked as a translator and intelligence officer. Later he belonged to the reserve of this branch of service. In 1919 he returned to Lafayette where he worked in horticulture.

At the same time, Mouton began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1919 and 1927 and again from 1931 to 1935 he was mayor of Lafayette. In 1929 and 1930 he also served as a postman in this city. In 1936 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia , where President Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for a second term. In the 1936 congressional elections , Mouton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Numa F. Montet on January 3, 1937 . After re-election in 1938, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1941 . During this time, further New Deal laws by the federal government were passed there.

In 1940 Mouton was no longer nominated by his party for another term in Congress. In the following years he worked in horticulture again. He also got into the real estate industry. Robert Mouton died in New Orleans on November 26, 1956.
