Alcée Louis la Branche

Alcée Louis la Branche (* 1806 near New Orleans , Orleans Territory , †  August 17, 1861 in Hot Springs , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1845 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

The exact date of birth of Alcée la Branche is unknown. He studied at the Université de Sorèze in Sorèze ( France ). After his return to Louisiana, he worked as a planter and politician; he was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1831 to 1833 he was an MP and Speaker in the House of Representatives from Louisiana . From 1837 to 1840 he was American envoy to the Republic of Texas, which had been independent of Mexico since 1836 .

In the congressional elections of 1842 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded John Bennett Dawson , who moved to the third district, on March 4, 1843 . Until March 3, 1845 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was overshadowed by the discussions about a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas.

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Alcée la Branche is no longer politically active. In 1847 he served as a naval officer with the New Orleans Port Authority. He died in Hot Springs on August 17, 1861 and was buried in St. Charles Parish , Louisiana.
