John Rarick (1966)

John Richard Rarick (born January 29, 1924 in Waterford , Elkhart County , Indiana , † September 14, 2009 in St. Francisville , Louisiana ) was an American politician .

Life

Rarick attended high school in Goshen , then went to Ball State Teacher's College in Muncie and studied at Louisiana State University . During the Second World War he served in the US Army for three years . He became a prisoner of war and later fled the German prisoner of war camp in which he had been imprisoned. Rarick was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart . After the war he resumed his studies and attended the School of Law at Tulane University , where he received his degree in 1949. He was admitted to the Louisiana bar that same year.

On June 28, 1961, Rarick was elected Judge for the 20th District Court. He held this office until May 15, 1966, when he resigned to run for a seat in Congress . After his successful election, he represented the state of Louisiana from January 3, 1967 to January 3, 1975 as a Democrat in the US House of Representatives . For the elections to the 94th Congress in 1974 he was no longer nominated as a candidate. Rarick began to work as a lawyer again.

In 1976 he tried unsuccessfully to become a presidential candidate for the American Independent Party . His attempt to be re-elected to Congress in the same year also failed. In the presidential election four years later, he was finally put up as a candidate by the American Independent Party. He achieved 41,268 votes, which corresponded to a share of 0.05 percent and brought him seventh place. Rarick died in September 2009 in St. Francisville and was buried in the Star Hill Cemetery there.
