James Mann (politician)

James Mann (born June 22, 1822 in Gorham , Maine , †  August 26, 1868 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) was an American politician . In 1868 he represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Mann spent most of his life in Maine. There he was a member of the House of Representatives of that state from 1849 to 1850 . He was a member of the Maine Senate from 1851 to 1853 . He was then a chamberlain in Cumberland County between 1962 and 1863 . He was also employed by the Customs Service in the port of Portland .

During the civil war , Mann joined the US Army . There he became paymaster with the rank of major. During the Reconstruction , Mann worked for the Treasury Department in the occupied state of Louisiana. He was living in New Orleans at the time. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . After the re-admission of Louisiana to the Union and the associated congressional representation, James Mann was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of the state in 1868 . There he took up his new mandate on July 18, 1868. But he died a few weeks later, on August 26, 1868, in New Orleans. He was then buried in his birthplace, Gorham.
