Glen Clay Higgins (born August 24, 1961 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2017, he has represented the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Clay Higgins graduated from Covington High School and then studied at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge . He then joined the United States Army , where he was used in the military police. Then he was with the National Guard also in the military police service. He served in the military for a total of six years. Until 2004 he was managing director of a car dealership in Opelousas . He then worked in the police service of the city of Opelousas and then in Port Barre . In 2011 he joined the police force in St. Landry Parish . In 2014 he was promoted to Public Information Officer of his office, where he rose to captain . To combat crime, he had videos about crimes posted on the Internet, among other things. This led to controversy and to his resignation in February 2016. In March 2016, he became the deputy marshal in the city of Lafayette .

Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In the 2016 congressional election , Higgins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Louisiana , where he succeeded Charles Boustany on January 3, 2017 in favor of a then-failed US Senate candidacy had renounced another application for the House of Representatives. In the election there was the special feature of the so-called Jungle Primary , which took place on November 8, 2016. Higgins finished in second place behind Scott Angelle , who was also running for the Republicans. In the runoff election on December 10, 2016, Higgins then prevailed with 56.1 percent of the vote.
