Steve Scalise

Stephen Joseph "Steve" Scalise (* 6. October 1965 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American politician of the Republican . Since 2008 he has represented the 1st congressional district of the state of Louisiana in the US House of Representatives . He was Majority Whip of the Republican majority from June 2014 to 2018 , and after the 2018 elections in January 2019 he was elected House minority whip of the Republican minority in the House of Representatives.

Family, education and work

Scalise attended Rummel High School and then graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge . He then worked as a software developer and head of marketing for a technology company.

Scalise is married to Jennifer Letulle (* 1975); the two have two children.

Political career

Scalise was a Republican MP in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1995 to 2007 . In 2008 he was a member of the State Senate for a few months .

After the resignation of MP Bobby Jindal , who had been elected Governor of Louisiana, Scalise was elected as its successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the due by-election for Louisiana's first congressional constituency. There he took up his mandate on May 3, 2008. He has been re-elected since then; his current legislative period runs until January 3, 2021. He is or was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and two of its sub-committees. On June 19, 2014, Scalise was elected the Republicans Whip , which corresponds to the German position of Parliamentary Director. Scalise thus has the third highest rank in the group.

Baseball assassination

In the June 14, 2017 Congressional baseball attack , Scalise was shot in the hip by 66-year-old building surveyor James Hodgkinson of Belleville , Illinois . The assassin died after an exchange of fire with the police. Upon admission to the hospital, Scalise was initially in critical condition, which was stabilized after several operations. Scalise returned to Congress on September 28, 2017.
