Heinz Brandl (born June 29, 1940 in Znaim , Reichsgau Niederdonau ) is an Austrian civil engineer specializing in geotechnical engineering . He is a professor emeritus at the Vienna University of Technology .

Life

Brandl studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Vienna , where he graduated as a graduate engineer in 1963 , then worked as an assistant at the Institute for Foundation Engineering and Soil Mechanics and in 1966 received his doctorate summa cum laude in geotechnical engineering. He was then a private lecturer and head of the earthworks laboratory. In 1971 he left the university and worked independently as a consulting engineer. In 1977 he was given a full professorship for foundation engineering , soil and rock mechanics (including tunneling) at the Graz University of Technology . From 1978 to 1981 he was head of the foundation engineering institute. From 1981 to 2008 he was professor and head of the Institute for Geotechnics at the Vienna University of Technology and thus one of the successors of Karl von Terzaghi on the chair after Fröhlich and Borowicka . In honor of Terzaghi, Brandl initiated the Terzaghi Lectures in Vienna ( Vienna Terzaghi Lectures of the ISSMGE). He has been Professor Emeritus there since 2009.

Brandl has produced over 580 scientific publications (partly in 21 languages) on a wide variety of geotechnical issues, for example slope and slope stabilization, others on geosynthetics , interdisciplinary (geotechnical- geodetic ) measurement techniques and geothermal issues such as energy foundations. Brandl was responsible for over 4000 geotechnical projects.

From 1997 to 2001 he was Vice President for Europe of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). From 1972 to 2015 he was chairman of the Austrian National Committee of the ISSMGE, since 2015 he has been its honorary president. He is a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts (since 1992) and the New York Academy of Sciences (1997), the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (2014), the International Academy of Engineering (Moscow 2015). In 2001 he was a Rankine Lecturer ( Energy foundations and other thermoactive ground structures , Geotechnique Volume 56, 2006, pp. 81-122). Since 2003 he has been President of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects (ÖIAV). Brandl's specialty is geotechnical sciences, which combine civil engineering, geology and environmental technology (including aspects of infrastructure, protection from natural hazards, energy). He is a multiple honorary doctor.

Honors

Brandl received numerous national and international honors, including a .:
