Harald Kainz

Harald Kainz (born August 5, 1958 in Graz ) is an Austrian engineer and university professor . He has been Rector of TU Graz since October 1, 2011, succeeding Hans Sünkel in this role .

Life

Harald Kainz was born on August 5, 1958 in Graz as the son of the chief gendarmerie officer Josef Kainz and the elementary school director Margareta Kainz. After attending his mother's elementary school in St. Radegund from 1964 to 1968 and graduating from a high school in Graz (2nd BG and BRG Lichtenfelsgasse) in 1976, he did his military service (reserve officer) in 1976/1977.

Kainz studied civil engineering from 1977 to 1983 and industrial engineering from 1980 to 1985 at the Technical University of Graz. From 1982 to 1984 he worked as a study assistant and from 1984 to 1990 as a university assistant at the Institute for Urban Water Management and Landscape Water Engineering. His doctorate in technical sciences took place in 1990, and his dissertation was on the topic of "Effects of shock loads on the solid matter balance of a activated sludge plant".

Between 1991 and 2000 he worked in leading positions in various engineering offices; From 1991 to 1993 he worked in the engineering office, Regierungsbaumeister Schlegel GmbH, Munich (planning of sewage treatment plants and sewer networks, e.g. the sewage treatment plants in Friedrichshafen, Ingolstadt and Munich) and from 1993 to 2000 as managing director of Umwelttechnik Wien GmbH (planning, construction supervision and Project management of major projects in the field of sewage and waste management, including the main sewage treatment plant in Vienna, sewage treatment plants in Zagreb and Budapest, hazardous waste incineration plant Vienna-Simmering, drainage at Vienna Airport).

In 2000 he returned to Graz University of Technology as a university professor and head of the institute for urban water management and landscaping. The focus of his research included the operational optimization and rehabilitation of water infrastructure, precipitation and mixed water management as well as hydraulically determined structures in wastewater management.

From 2004 to 2007 he was dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. From 2007 to 2011 he was Vice Rector for Infrastructure and Information and Communication Technologies at the Technical University. He has been the rector of the university since October 1, 2011, succeeding Hans Sünkel . In spring 2014 he was re-elected for a second term of office until September 2019, in June 2018 he was reappointed as rector of Graz University of Technology for a third term from October 2019 to September 2023.

On May 4, 2018, the first university fire brigade was founded at the Technical University of Graz, and on June 9, 2018, Rector Harald Kainz was elected fire brigade commander.

Kainz has been married since 1984 (to the doctor Dr. med. Andrea Kainz, née Pszywyj) and has two daughters (Theresa, * 1986, and Johanna, * 1988).
