Life

Like his father, he decided to become a civil engineer. At the Graz University of Technology he studied with Ferdinand Wittenbauer and Philipp Forchheimer . After graduating in 1913, he was drafted into the military and last took part in the First World War as a commander of a high mountain company.

After a short assistant and construction company activity , he joined the newly founded Steirissche Wasserkraft- und Elektrizitäts-AG in 1922 . As design manager and later as deputy director, he helped shape the rise of this company for 16 years. In 1930 he received his doctorate. In 1937 he qualified as a professor in the field of hydropower management at the Technical University of Graz. In 1938 he was appointed to the board of the Alpenelektrowerke in Vienna. He was particularly interested in the facilities of the Drava and the Hohe Tauern. In his time, which tended to be excessive, he succeeded in pushing through his concept for the Glockner-Kaprun group against some resistance. However, he was unable to participate in the further construction of the facilities after 1945.

In 1948 he became a full professor for hydraulic engineering at the Graz University of Technology. There he created a new hydraulic engineering laboratory, was dean of his faculty and rector of the university. His professional achievements have been recognized by various honors. In 1962 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Munich. In 1963 he retired, but continued to work tirelessly in science and practice. Grenng has reported on his experiences and research work in numerous publications.

He was considered to be an important representative of modern hydropower construction in Austria.
