Philipp Forchheimer (born August 7, 1852 in Vienna , † October 2, 1933 in Dürnstein , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian hydrologist and engineer .

Life

He was a pioneer in the field of civil engineering and practical hydraulics as well as a professor in Istanbul , Aachen and Graz . He introduced the mathematical method in hydraulics and thus placed it on a scientific basis. In particular, he applied the Laplace equation to the calculations of the groundwater flow and thus derived well formulas. In the Forchheimer equation , he expanded the Darcy equation for groundwater flow to include a turbulence term. At the Technical University of Graz he was rector until 1897. In addition to his teaching activities, he worked as a consultant for construction projects. He made proposals to build a tunnel under the English Channel .

Philipp Forchheimer was the son of the numismatist Eduard Forchheimer (1820–1907). In 1933, Forchheimergasse in Vienna- Liesing (23rd district) was named after him.
