Ernst Chwalla (born August 28, 1901 in Vienna , † June 1, 1960 in Vienna or Graz ) was an Austrian civil engineer .

Life

Ernst Chwalla, son of a Viennese silk industrial family, graduated in civil engineering from the Technical University of Vienna in 1924 . He was a research assistant to Friedrich Hartmann at the Institute for Bridge Construction. In 1926 he became a Dr.-Ing. With a thesis on the lateral stiffness of open bridges . PhD. In 1928 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on stability theory. In 1930 he was offered a professorship for structural engineering at the German Technical University in Brno and was head of the institute for structural engineering.

At the end of the war, Chwalla was taken prisoner by the Soviets and was interned in a Czech labor camp. With the help of professor colleagues in Brno, an investigation was initiated and in June 1945 he was released. Chwalla worked together with Karl Girkmann in Vienna as a freelance engineer and consultant for dam, power plant and pressure pipeline construction in post-war Austria and lectured on reinforced concrete at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna . In 1955 he switched to the newly established professorship for structural engineering at the Graz University of Technology . He died of a heart attack.

From 1925 to 1960, Ernst Chwalla was the leading academic in the field of stability theory in steel construction. He published numerous scientific papers on the residual stresses after exceeding the elastic range in notches as well as on steel bars with and without eccentricities that were loaded far beyond the stability limit. His findings on stability theory were decisive. Together with Willy Gehler (TH Dresden) he was a pioneer of the steel construction standard DIN 4114, together with Kurt Klöppel (TH Darmstadt) he is considered the "father" of DIN 4114 (1952) stability cases. His work "Introduction to Structural Analysis" was a longstanding standard work for training at universities.

Awards

He was accepted into the Association of German Engineers . In 1954 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from a Dr.-Ing. Eh honored by the Technical University of Berlin . In 1959 Chwalla was elected a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .
