Lied für eine Freund was the German contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 , which was sung in German by mother and daughter Maxi & Chris Garden . He reached 14th place in the competition with 48 points. It was the only time in the history of the competition that mother and daughter competed as a duet.
Music and lyrics
There is a piano-dominated pop - / pop - ballad , which was played by Maxi & Chris Garden live four hands. The text is addressed to a friend who is described as “honest and straightforward” and to whom a similar song is dedicated: “Because that's how you are, like this song for a friend / A song like you, the way you live and how you dream / If you hear it, somewhere, I miss you so much. "
Origin and reception
Music and lyrics come from the well-known Schlager and ESC composer duo Ralph Siegel and Bernd Augener , the producer was Ralph Siegel. The single was released in the spring of 1988 on Jupiter Records . On the B-side of the German single is the song Du und Ich . An English version of the song, Song for a Friend, and a French version, Chant pour un ami, were also recorded. On March 31st, Maxi & Chris Garden won the preliminary round in Nuremberg , Ein Lied für Dublin , which was broadcast on ARD , with Lied für eine Freund , after they last year made peace for the teddy bears , which was also written by Siegel / Opinioner had achieved. This time they were able to prevail against Cindy Berger with And I want to live too .
On June 15, 1988, Maxi & Chris Garden appeared with the song in the ZDF hit parade and reached sixth place via the then current ticket procedure. The single reached number 29 in the German charts and was placed for five weeks, in Belgium ( Flanders ) at number 38.
Eurovision Song Contest
Lied für eine Freund was listed in 11th place in the Song Contest (after Jump the Gun for Ireland with Take Him Home and before Wilfried for Austria with Lisa Mona Lisa ). Michael Thatcher was the conductor. At the beginning of the performance, the loudspeakers fell out in the whole hall, only Maxi & Chris Garden continued to sing because they had the playback in their ears. In the auditorium, however, only the two voices could be heard without amplification. Ralph Siegel later said: “The result was accordingly. I almost died. ”At the end of the vote, the song had received 48 points and was 14th out of 21.
