Abner Taylor

Abner Taylor (born January 19, 1829 in Bangor , Maine , †  April 13, 1903 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1832, Abner Taylor and his parents moved to Champaign County , Ohio . He came to Chicago via Iowa in 1860 . He worked in the construction industry and also ran a shop prior to his time in Chicago. During the Civil War he served as a Tennessee colonel in the management of confiscated Confederate material. After the war, Taylor returned to Chicago, where he became a successful businessman. He ran a few shops and was also active in the real estate industry and continued to work in the construction industry. In this capacity he was involved in the rebuilding of the city of Chicago after the great fire in 1871. Taylor also worked in other cities in the United States. Among other things, he built the Texas State Capitol in Austin . He also built roads and even some railroad lines.

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1884 and 1886 he was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives ; in June 1884 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago. In the congressional elections of 1888 Taylor was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first constituency of Illinois, where he succeeded Ransom W. Dunham on March 4, 1889 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1893 .

In 1892 Abner Taylor declined to run again. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, he resumed his previous activities. He died on April 13, 1903 in the federal capital Washington.
