Charles Schuveldt Dewey (born November 10, 1880 in Cadiz , Harrison County , Ohio , †  December 27, 1980 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1941 and 1945 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

While still a child, Charles Dewey came to Chicago , where he attended public schools. He then graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord ( New Hampshire ). He then studied until 1904 at Yale University . Between 1905 and 1917, Dewey was in the Chicago real estate business. During the First World War he served as an officer in the US Navy from 1917 to 1919 . Between 1920 and 1924 he was the vice president of a Chicago-based company. From 1924 to 1927 he served as a department head in the US Treasury Department . In 1926 and 1927, Dewey was also Treasurer of the American Red Cross . From 1927 to 1930 he was a financial advisor to the Polish government. At the same time he was one of the directors of Bank Polski . In 1931 he returned to Chicago, where he worked in the banking industry. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1938 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the 1940 congressional elections , Dewey was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat James McAndrews on January 3, 1941 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 1945. These were shaped by the events of the Second World War . In 1944 he was not re-elected.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Charles Dewey returned to banking. Between 1948 and 1952 he worked for the Joint Committee on Foreign Economic Cooperation . From 1957 to 1961 he headed the Red Cross in the District of Columbia . He died on December 27, 1980 in the federal capital Washington at the age of 100 and was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia .
