Sidney Elmer "Sid" Simpson (born September 20, 1894 in Carrollton , Illinois , †  October 26, 1958 in Pittsfield , Illinois) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1958 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sid Simpson attended his home public schools and Carrollton High School . During the First World War he served in the US Army . He was used on the European theater of war. He then founded the company Simpson Motor Co. and Simpson Bus Co . He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was their district chairman in Greene County . At times he also served as town treasurer in Carrollton. He was also a member of the local education committee.

In the 1942 congressional election , Simpson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 20th  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Democrat James M. Barnes on January 3, 1943 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on October 26, 1958 . His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . From 1953 to 1955 Simpson was chairman of the District of Columbia Administration Committee . At the time of his death, he had already been nominated for re-election by his party. Instead of him, his wife Edna was elected to Congress.
