Bradford N. Stevens

Bradford Newcomb Stevens (born January 3, 1813 in Boscawen , Merrimack County , New Hampshire , †  November 10, 1885 in Tiskilwa , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bradford Stevens attended the common schools and in Canadian Montreal . He then studied until 1835 at Dartmouth College in Hanover . Over the next six years he worked as a teacher in Hopkinsville ( Kentucky ) and New York City . In 1846 he came to Illinois Bureau County , where he worked in commerce and agriculture. He also served as the county surveyor and mayor of Tiskilwa Township. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1870 Stevens was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Republican Ebon C. Ingersoll on March 4, 1871 . Until March 3, 1873 he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Bradford Stevens returned to trading and farming. He died in Tiskilwa on November 10, 1885.
