John H. Lewis

John Henry Lewis (born July 21, 1830 in Ithaca , New York , †  January 6, 1929 in Knoxville , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1836, John Lewis came to Illinois with his parents, where the family settled on a farm in Fulton County . He attended the public schools in his new home. In 1847 he moved to Knox County , where he worked in agriculture. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1860, he began to work in Knoxville in this profession. From 1860 to 1864 he was employed in the administration at the district court. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1874 and 1875 .

In the congressional elections of 1880 Lewis was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Thomas A. Boyd on March 4, 1881 . Since he was not confirmed in 1882, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1883 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Lewis practiced as a lawyer again. In 1900 he retired. He died in Knoxville on January 6, 1929, at the age of 98.
