Glenn Poshard

Glenn Poshard (born October 30, 1945 in Herald , White County , Illinois ) is an American politician . Between 1989 and 1999 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Glenn Poshard attended the Herald Elementary School between 1950 and 1958 and then the Carmi Township High School until 1962 . Between 1962 and 1965 he served in the US Army . He then studied until 1974 at Southern Illinois University Carbondale . In the following years he held various positions in the education sector. Among other things, he worked as a teacher and trainer. Between 1974 and 1984 he was director of the Area Service Center for Educators of the gifted , an institution for the promotion of gifted students. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1984 and 1988 he was a member of the Illinois Senate .

In the 1988 congressional elections , Poshard was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 22nd  constituency of Illinois , where he succeeded Kenneth J. Gray on January 3, 1989 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1999 . Since 1993 he represented there as the successor to Terry L. Bruce the 19th district of his state.

In 1998, Glenn Poshard renounced another congressional candidacy. Instead, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of governor of Illinois, where he was defeated by Republican George Ryan . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Poshard and his wife Jo founded the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children , a foundation to help abused children. Glenn Poshard has been President of Southern Illinois University since 2006.
