John F. Farnsworth

John Franklin Farnsworth (born March 27, 1820 in Eaton , Québec , Canada , † July 14, 1897 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician who represented Illinois as a Republican member in the US House of Representatives , and during the Civil War also a brigadier general the US Army .

Life

After attending elementary school, his parents settled with him in 1834 in Ann Arbor , Michigan , where he later studied law. After being admitted to the bar, he settled as a lawyer in St. Charles in 1841 , before opening a law firm in Chicago in 1852 . There he was initially involved in the Democratic Party , but then joined the Republican Party.

In 1856 he ran as a Republican for the US House of Representatives, represented there after a re-election from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1861, the second congressional electoral district of Illinois and in 1860 renounced a renewed candidacy.

At the beginning of the Civil War he was on September 18, 1861 Colonel and Commander of the 8th  Cavalry Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Forces. As such, he led this unit during the Peninsula Campaign and the Battle of Williamsburg on May 5, 1862. He was then commander of the 17th Cavalry Brigade of the Army of the Potomac and was on December 5, 1862 after participating in the Maryland campaign promoted to brigadier general. Due to war injuries, he resigned from active military service and instead ran again for the US Congress .

After his election, he was again a member of the US House of Representatives on March 4, 1863 and again represented the second congressional constituency of Illinois for ten years until March 3, 1873. During this time, he was from 1867 to 1873 and Chairman of the Committee for the postal service and the post-roads ( House Committee on Post Office and Post Roads ). After he was not nominated again in 1872 and resigned from the House of Representatives at the end of the legislature, he resumed his practice as a lawyer in Chicago. In 1880 he founded a law firm in Washington and worked there until his death.

His nephew, Elon John Farnsworth, was also a Brigadier General of the Northern States during the Civil War and fell on the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg .
