Walter Reeves
Walter Reeves (born September 25, 1848 in Brownsville , Fayette County , Pennsylvania , † April 9, 1909 in Streator , Illinois ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1903 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1856, Walter Reeves moved with his parents to a farm in LaSalle County , Illinois, where he attended public schools. After that he taught himself as a teacher for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began to work in this profession in Streator. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .
In the 1894 congressional election , Reeves was elected to the 11th constituency of Illinois in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Benjamin F. Marsh on March 4, 1895 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four terms in Congress by March 3, 1903 . During this time the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1901 Reeves was chairman of the patent committee. In 1902 he decided not to run again for Congress.
As early as 1900, Walter Reeves sought unsuccessfully to nominate his party for the upcoming election as governor of Illinois. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on April 9, 1909 in Streator.
