James R. Williams

James Robert Williams (born December 27, 1850 in Carmi , Illinois , †  November 8, 1923 in Loma Linda , California ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1895 and again from 1899 to 1905 he represented the state of Illinois in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Williams attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1875 at Indiana University in Bloomington . After a subsequent law degree at the Union College of Law in Chicago and his admission to the bar in 1876, he began to work in Carmi in this profession. Between 1880 and 1882 he held the position of Master in Chancery . From 1882 to 1886 he was a district judge in White County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

After the death of MP Richard W. Townshend , Williams was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on December 2, 1889, when the by-election was due for the 19th seat of Illinois . After two re-elections, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1895 . In 1898 he was re-elected to Congress in the 20th  constituency of his state, where he was able to complete three further terms between March 4, 1899 and March 3, 1905 as the successor to James R. Campbell .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, James Williams practiced as a lawyer again. He died on November 8, 1923 in Loma Linda and was buried in Carmi.
